5 a.m.: a yawn, a stretch,
We rise - from bed, up mount.
In frozen mist with angled strides,
We cough and curse and spit and count.

Sheathed in rubber, nylon, plastic,
Plowing o’er the deep,
A dawning insect mammal yearning:
We drift…and dream of sleep.
